Victor Thomas, 35, sits in his room at the Jeffersonville Adult Home where he has lived for the past seven years. He is a big fan of Puerto Rican music, and he decorated the wall behind him that s morning with call letters from various Puerto Rican television and radio stations. "I'm pretty good with the scissors," he said, adding, "Lots of people just do everything the same way day after day, but I do things different. I do it my way."

He is standing on the property proposed for the 485-acre development. The centerpiece would be a $100 million retail center. The project, originally proposed in 2000, has been stalled and diverted over the years by a variety of planning issues.
Kurtis Hanson carries a Christmas stocking and wears a helmut while helping his mom Denae Hanson move after she and the rest of the 120 residents of the Greenwoods Trailer Park in Whitefish, Mont. were served eviction notices. For most, it was the end of their time in Whitefish. The booming resort town has seen real estate prices increase by more than 300 percent in the past five years. With land values soaring, affordable housing has become non-existent, forcing low and fixed income people to leave the town.
Rudy Matule stands in front of a wall decorated with photos of his family and memorabilia from WWII, where he fought as a Marine on Iwo Jima. Matule, whose daughter died of diabetes 20 years ago and whose wife died of Alzheimer's 5 years ago, moved to the Montana Veteran's Home after a late night medical emergency. Matule took care of his wife for 15 years, but now has decided he needs care himself. "They take good care of me here, but sometimes I get awful lonely," he said.
Shontay Dominguez, left, and Jade Lipkins rehearse for the "40 Solid," the upcoming Bliss Dance Company recital. The show is named for the number of members in the dance company, and will be held Jan. 31 at the Vacaville Performing Arts Center.
Andy Biondo slides off of the waterfall at his lagoon-like, hand-made swimming pool. Biondo is a landscape artist and the 66,000 gallon pool was a project more than 14 years in the making. The faux-rock, made with traditional overlay and foam products, is all hand formed. "Every time I'm in this pool I feel proud of the work I've done here," he said.
Joel Martinez is bundled up in a wool blanket in an effort to stay warm while outside during a cold stormy day in Fairfield. Martinez has been homeless in Fairfield for four months and has been sleeping at night in the Suisun Marsh, which can be seen in the background of the photo.
Teri Buck, of Vacaville, cheers on her horse while Patti Lindsay and John Stimak, both of Suisun City, watch the race with binoculars Wednesday at the Solano County Fairgrounds race track.. Race fans were in good spirits Wednesday because the fair is offering two weeks of races as opposed to the one week last year. "This is great," Buck said. "All this excitement and I only lost 5 bucks."
LeRoy Williams, founder of the Milestones Choir - a musical group for people with disabilities, sings a solo during a gospel tune while choir member Cynthia Mack holds the microphone for him. The group was performing during the opening of the Juneteenth Celebration Saturday in Vallejo, Calif.
