A Glove Story
Shelley Burton jogs while Heather Blush rides next to her. Burton has been a boxer for three years and is training for her first title fight. Her life-partner Blush has agreed to train her. "I've never had a trainer as committed as Heather is," Burton said. "Most people just give me a few pointers in the gym," but Heather has given up her life to help me do this."
Burton does pushups while Blush watches. Burton used to train in Las Vegas at a state-of-the-art facility, but she was economically unable and personally unwilling to leave Montana to train for this fight. The small, run-down gym where she currently trains is the only one in the area.
Blush holds onto Shelley's feet while she stretches during training. "I don't have much experience in this, but I love Shelley, and I know we can win this fight." Blush said.
Press, promoters and fighters gather to watch Burton's weigh-in for the title fight in Edmonton, Alberta. Burton weighed in eight pounds under. "This is the best shape I have ever seen her in," Burton's manager said, "Heather has done an incredible job."
Blush kisses Burton while she gets her hair done before the fight. "This is a tradition," Burton said. "We get together in the hotel and do my hair and just try anything we can to keep my mind of the fight. Otherwise my nerves will kill me."
Burton takes a punch to the face from Laura Ramsey during their fight in front of 5,000 people at the Edmonton Convention Center for the WIBA Intercontinental title. Burton has spent the better part of the last three years preparing for the chance at a belt. "This is it. This is my chance to be a champ," she said.
Burton jumps in celebration after winning a majority decision. "Now my dream has come true. I'm a champion," she said. "This is the best day of my life. Ever since I was a kid I have wanted to be the best at something, and now I am."
At the end of the night, Burton, with swollen eyes and a pounding headache, collapses into bed and Heather comforts her until she falls asleep.

I’m an aspiring young photojournalist and I just wanted to complement you on your inspirational work. In this piece I love that you don’t see the subject’s face until she’s being hit in the face. For me at least, i felt like her opponent, dodging punches and trying to peak out to see her face and then finally landing a solid glove to the face. Bravo!
